North Korea Vows to Make Nuclear Weapons that can Target the U.S.
North Korea released a statement in which they singled the United States of America as a “sworn enemy” of the Korean people. North Korea today announced plans of a third nuclear test in which they hope to be able to manufacture nuclear weapons that can strike the U.S. The statement from North Korea’s National Defense Commission read: “Settling accounts with the U.S. needs to be done with force, not with words as it regards jungle law as the rule of its survival. We are not disguising the fact that the various satellites and long-range rockets that we will fire and the high-level nuclear test we will carry out are targeted at the United States.”
ABC News reports:
“South Korean officials analyzed debris from the December launch that, they say, indicates North Korea built and tested crucial components for a missile that can fly further than 6,200 miles. Analysts say that preparations at the Pungyee test site in northeastern North Korea are underway and that a new underground test could take place on short notice.”
It is believed that the North Koreans are many years away from manufacturing small nuclear bombs that can be mounted onto long-range missiles.
I find today’s news very troubling. I thought Kim Jong-UN (who succeeded his father who died last year) would be less aggressive than his father. It turns out not only was I wrong, but I was naively optimistic. He seems to be even crazier than his father.
I’m looking forward to our president’s response. I don’t think President Obama is a pushover. I think the killing of Osama bin Laden and the continued drone strikes are indicative that he isn’t unwilling to use the best resources of our military. I think the administration should be firm and adamant (as they so far have been) that these plans will not be tolerated.
By no means I’m I advocating that we go to war with North Korea. I just hope we are prepared in the case we have to engage in a provoked war.
What do you think?
What should the administration’s position be on the matter?
