Aurora shooting victims marry a year after theater rampage

Eugene Han and Kristin DavisJuly 20th marked the 1st anniversary of the terrible shooting at an Aurora, Colorado theater.  Kristin Davis and Eugene Han were injured in the shootings.  Eugene was more severely injured as he tried to protect his girlfriend from the spray of bullets.  Their recovery, both physical and mental, is ongoing.

Eugene, 21, never really thought of getting married.  But after his near-death experience a new-found urgency to live in the moment arose within him.  In April, during a vacation in Texas, he proposed to Kristin.  After much discussion the pair decided to marry on July 20th.  Kristin initially worried that their wedding date would be insensitive.  Eugene thought it was the perfect way to reclaim the day.

The couple married this past weekend.  I think if they really wanted to get married they should get married whenever they want.  I think it’s nice they want to reclaim the day from their shooter.  This way he or any wacko will never and forever claim the lives of his victims and their families.

What do you think?

Do you think it was insensitive?

I don’t see it as any more insensitive than people going to the movies that day, frankly.
Or people getting on a plane after 9/11.
I agree that they should be able to marry whenever they please – and if they survived to tell the tale and want to remember July 20 as an anniversary of something GOOD and BEAUTIFUL rather than a horrifying tragedy, I applaud that.
I don’t think if you lost someone that day you’ll ever ‘get over it’ even if one day you do have some closure with it – but if there are things you can do to turn it around and declare that the terror of that night will NOT dominate your life anymore, do it.

One of my co-workers, turns out her sister was in that movie theater, in that screening, that night last year and she and her boyfriend thankfully made it out alive and unharmed. But they went to the movies, to that theater, on the anniversary. And they plan on doing so every year to both commemorate those who were killed or injured and their families and to reclaim the day and defy Holmes, to say he did not win and he will not win.
In that case as in this one, I say ‘bravo.’
