James Harrison returning his sons’ “participation trophies”

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker, James Harrison, took to Instagram on Saturday to say he was returning two awards his sons James III and Henry received from a local athletics event. Harrison noted that while he is proud of his young children, he only wants his sons to earn “real” trophies. EA Sports pulls Patrick Kane from NHL ‘16 video game cover amid police investigation

Electronic Sports has decided to remove the image of star Chicago Blackhawks hockey player, Patrick Kane, from the upcoming video game ahead of its September 15th release. An investigation is underway as to whether Kane sexually abused a woman while visiting his hometown of Hamburg, New York in early August. The NHL as well as Blackhawks owner, Rocky Wirtz, have only stated they are aware of the investigation and will continue to monitor the situation. Read More…

Why I won’t be watching the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi…

SochiI’ve been watching the Olympics for as long as I can remember.  I regularly watch both the Winter and Summer Olympics.  I’ve always tried to see as many activities as I can possibly watch (not the easiest task).  It is definitely a tradition of mine.  I simply love watching the best athletes compete in a world venue.  While I have been a loyal viewer of the Games for most of my life, this year I will refrain from watching a single minute. Pressure mounts for the Washington Redskins to be renamed

For the better half of this year, NFL owner Dan Synder has consistently been pressured by activist groups to change the name of his professional team.  The Washington Redskins is the current moniker for the D.C. team.  Ray Halbritter of the Oneida Nation met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Dan Synder in an attempt to reach a compromise.  The outrage for the team name is literally derived from its meaning.  The word “Redskin” as defined by Merriam-Webster is “Native American” although in a usually offensive manner. Honor Student Erin Cox Punished for Giving Drunken Friend a Ride Home

Erin CoxErin Cox is a high school senior at North Andover High School.  In addition to her role as captain of the school’s volleyball team she is also an honor student.  Earlier this month, after finishing work Erin received a phone call from a friend who had been drinking at an underage party.  Her friend asked her if she could pick her up to avoid recklessly driving home herself.  As any good friend Erin drove to the party to pick up her friend.  Read More…

Sunday Night Football Theme Song: Carrie Underwood vs. Faith Hill

Carrie UnderwoodThis past Sunday, country superstar Carrie Underwood premiered the new, “revamped” Sunday Night Football theme song for the NBC network.  Underwood took over the duties this year after Faith Hill has sung the theme song for many years.  While many thought it was an admirable entry, many loyal SNF (Sunday Night Football) fans are demanding Faith Hill be brought back to sing the theme song.  They think Underwood’s performance was sub par.  Read More…

Victoria Arlen, a Paralyzed U.S. Swimmer, is Banned from Paralympic World Championships

Victoria Arlen after realizing she won a gold medalVictoria Arlen was banned from the Paralympics in Montreal because the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) deemed her “not paralyzed” enough.  The ruling came days before the 18-year-old was set to compete in this year’s World Championships.  The four-time medalist at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London was shocked at the ruling.  Read More…
